A cat tree + litter box inspired by furniture design.
Research & Strategy
This project started with the original brief to design a competitive cat tree for Wayfair and Amazon Markets.
After extensive market research, we identified a potential for modern cat products that departed from the traditional carpet aesthetic.
The research-informed direction re-focused on pieces that more seamlessly blend into the home environment acting more like furniture than a pet product.
Ideation
Early ideation explored designs inspired by bookcases, accent cabinets, and side tables.
A wide range of features were explored to find the popper balance between style and functionality.
The styling in early ideation leaned towards a modern/boho aesthetic based on the popularity of these styles in the current market showcased in the research.
Refinement
The refined direction focused on a hutch-style cat tree and an accent cabinet-inspired litter box holder.
At this stage, I incorporated replaceable parts such as the removable sisal scratch pad, intended to both promote the longevity of the product and encourage recurring sales over the lifetime of the designs.
Final Direction
After a few cycles of refinement, the final direction was approved, with the Cat Tree and Litter Box Cover moving forward as a set.
Both of the final designs offer easy-to-clean laminated surfaces, replaceable scratching pads, magnetic locking doors, and washable cat beds.
Production Drawings
With the final product approved, I moved forward with the tech packs for the prototyping and manufacturing process with our team in China.
Prototyping
Once the final samples were approved and met quality control standards, they were showcased at both the 2022 Vegas Summer Market and The Vegas Pet Super Zoo.
Cecil Pet Line will be launched as a Zeil Home Exclusive in early 2023.
